If you’re like me then you crave some authentic car content to watch, scouring UA-cam each evening looking for something interesting and engaging.
I don’t want to watch hip and trendy UA-cam “influencers” boast of their supercar acquisitions, and I don’t really need to see expert mechanics do their thing, I just want to enjoy something made by someone more normal. Someone more like myself perhaps?
So that’s why I started making videos - and here they are - a regular journal of car maintenance and restoration that pretty much anyone could do themselves, if only they took the first step and had a go.
I’m not hip or trendy (probably no one who uses that phrase is) and as you will see I’m definitely not a mechanic, but I’m giving it a go and having an enormous amount of fun doing so.
Please take a moment to subscribe, and join me on this journey of discovery and learning by commenting with your help, encouragement or questions - I promise I’ll reply to them all.

Those Hard lines from Porsche are INCREDIBLY EXPENSIVE...save them at all costs if possible. Some are NLA. The last time I checked the Long front Passenger side was over $700 US . Take your time and work them loose. Heat, flare wrench on the solid nut and "crows foot" on as long a ratchet as you can find and work them loose. Just did Transmission lines that were SOLID...wrap a towel in Solvent of choice and let them sit for a day or two. The Aluminum Hubs are fine raw.
Thanks for the message Dan. I replaced everything, Porsche are expensive but you can get the same materials for a fraction of the cost :)
@@MrToddgibbs Did you video making the bends and the process? the long lines are incredibly complex. Would be interesting to see how you managed it. TY

You’re doing a very good job!!
Thank you!!
Well done mate. 928 door cards are a major pain to deal with.
Tell me about it ! I think they came up quite well though…. :)
Good info
Thanks :)
I always joke that whatever problem you have, somebody on youtube has your solution. So here I am, watching Todd Gibbs solving my problem for a jammed plunger in a fuel distributor in my 1979 porsche 928😂😂 thanks Todd!
Lol glad to be of service Ted :)
Hi Todd. Have you wathched this video? ua-cam.com/video/GHTSjoFD1vw/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared They seem to know thier stuff on oils and they have a pretty convincing explaination to the flex plate & torque tube issue. Keep up the good work. 🎉
Hey, yes I know the channel :)
Nicer, more appropriate sound with the silencers! With gear changes, do you think you’re getting full throttle travel when accelerating?
Agreed, exhaust is a little more refined. I’m going to modify the straight pipes a little …. Yes it’s getting full throttle. One time you can see it visibly accelerating slower, that’s because the Bowden cable is too tight and it’s stopping full throttle
Great video, enjoyed watching the problem solving.
Thank you for watching :)
I had an ‘82 with the 3spd auto as a daily driver for 10 years. If I floored the throttle and kept my foot to the floor it would hold a gear through to 6,000 rpm before changing up. However I found it more enjoyable to shift it like a tiptronic. Moving the shifter to 1st to start off it would hold 1st until I moved the shifter to 2nd.
Thats what Im aiming for. Manually changing all works fine, its just the early-shifting when in D. But 5k is almost there...
I have done s similar adjustment process and come to the conclusion that the only way to get full rpm is to change the gears manually. Maybe thats how its supposed to be.
Hi Bradley - ah interesting! Yes manual change works fine. I might adjust it a bit more…. I’m sure I can get 5500rpm
@@MrToddgibbs i adjusted mine until until it only changed gears when i release the throttle. Still didn't get the desired revs.
You seem to skip the part where you jammed the throttle peddle down and checked the cables, if the arm at the transmission is at its full travel there’s nothing left to give. If there’s still some play and no adjustment left you could put a knot in the cable under the hood.
Hey Gaz, yeah I filmed it but it’s hard to show under the car so I cut it. With pedal pushed fully down the cables are all tight…. I even over tightened it such that the throttle wouldn’t fully open. So I know it’s all adjusted ok now.
My piece of fuel pipe is similar to putting a knot :)
Change the modulator switch Todd.
Hey! Do you think that will help the gear change rpm? (Is it the think I adjust with the little key?)
Nice episode Todd, sort of casino how far the rpm could go. You unleashed 25 extra horses between 4k rpm and 5k😊. Offtopic : is known why the cold start takes so many cranks? Our 928 had such an issue too and it turned out be a fullpressureregulator
I want those 25 :) I noticed while editing the video how differently it accelerates each time (I just plant my foot, nothing fancy). Sometimes it seems to really take its time, others it whips the needle round… Cold start. It always needs 2 turns of the key. Even if I crank it for ages on first key turn it won’t start (I’ll test that tomorrow just to be sure)
@@MrToddgibbs hopefully soon you get the V8 run up to 6k🙏 to unleash the last 25 horses to come to the claimed 240hp🤗 good luck!
I'll keep working on it off-camera :)
Great progress this week. What an absolute nightmare of a problem!
Think I have it sussed now. Hoping to get into some juicy jobs soon…
Nice work Todd... If you put the gearbox in 1 or 2 (as opposed to drive) will it rev to the 6000 rpm redline when nailing it?
And beyond :) yes no issues with engine
Nice work Todd
Thanks man, happy with that result.
Must remember it’s not a sports car, it’s a GT car!
True, but I still want it to rev :) quite frustrating when it changes at 4k
I bet that housing estate really looks forwards to you using them for a sound test 🤣 More great diagnosis work. You'll get there in the end!
Lol yes, I can almost hear them cheer… Slowly getting there, not happy with Bowden cable yet….. tune in next week!
Todd, Took a break for 10 months from my '81 restoration. Going back to it next week. While you did not remove the handbrake cables from the rear hubs, I wonder if you had anyone refer you and sources on how to do that? As purchased the attachment from the cable to the parking brake shoe mechanism was broken so I have to remove the cables. Specific question is "is it possible to remove the metal sleeve that appears to be pressed in the hub (through which the cable travels)? Or maybe more appropriately - Must I remove that in order to fit a new cable? Many thanks for all the inspiration.
Hi Timothy, good to have you back! That is a good question, and one that stumped me. I never managed to get the handbrake cable away from either hub. From what I could see you need to undo the axel nut and pull off the piece with the wheel studs. That allows you to get at the end of the cable. When I searched on Rennlist (biggest 928 forum) it appeasr the rigid sleeve you are after is just pressed in, so should twist/wiggle out. Let me know how you get on! Instagram might be easier to chat...
Can you do a video on AC / alternator / power steering belt replacements
Hi realdata6116, if you go back through my videos I cover all of those belts. Just after fitting the engine. Hope that helps!
Good to see you back Mr Gibbs! When is the nitro boost going in? I’m expecting at least 1000bhp out of this baby.
Loving the enthusiasm:)
It's looking Quite Nice ,,Very impressed with the Holes U Cut in for Speaker holes, How did u go about that chore ?Wow . It looks, factory. Also I have used super glue or Jet to strengthen cardboard, & Learned to use Backing soda as a filler ,to bulk up small voids or tears .Put it on location Dry & then wet with fresh glue to lock up white powder, It worked well for me. The leather Coloring went well ,as you built up the base color slowly, coming back to original appearance. Thanks for sharing a great Video
Thanks for the comment Frank.

Thanks mick :)
This is really interesting for me as mine only reads 1/2 when full, rises really slowly and the reserve light is on all the time. Thanks for this

Awesome achievement well done
Thanks :)
Enjoy watching your series of videos 👍 Did you consider having the block professional cleaned? Like where it’s put into a vat of hot cleaning solution and it removes all the grease, grime, old gasket material, etc.
Hi, thanks for watching ! I did, but as I wasn’t taking the bottom end apart I decided not to. It came up pretty clean though :)
in my eyes, the 996 turbo is the most beautiful generation of them all. It still has this old school 90s/00s vibe while at the same time looking very aggressive
Totally agree. I love the headlights as well. Thanks for your message
The pressure modulator does indeed control shift firmness. On my 928, I had a soft change with an annoying “flare” between changes. Winding up modulator fixed this, to the point I get a tyre squeal between gear changes when my foot hits the pedal hard. Cheers from Sydney.
Hi Anthony, oh nice work :) not sure mine has the ooomph to squeak in gear change. I’ve wound mine another 1/2 turn clockwise and it definitely firmer.
I bow do(w)n to your perserveance wiith fault finding I can give my 3 speed 4.5 a blat tomorrow and see where things change up and down if you like Weather might be alright, winter is knocking on door But another great video for us to referernce to
Thanks Pieter, that would be useful. And compare your engine up in higher rpm…. Does it sound like mine ?
@@MrToddgibbs Hope to get this done tomorrow, weather today very unfriendly I'll see if I can video it, only have my phone
Regarding the oil pump washers are they not standard cup washers A8,4 as per the parts list?
Hi Mick, to be honest I’m not sure, I was following advice that they are hard to find.
@@MrToddgibbs I will try and research this for future reference.Loving your Journey I have just started mine with a 1988 S4 so am learning from you. Fascinating stuff and great work.I especially like your penetrating oil great innovation well done and keep making these videos they are great
Hi Todd, I have the 3 speed AT and setting the shifting later or earlier is done at the back on the AT itself. There is a clamp that you can change. The more tight you set the cable, the quicker it shifts. I have the impression that your kickdown is not working properly. Kickdown is done via a switch under your gaspedal. If operate the kickdown at around 30Mph, it should raise rpm from 2000 till 4000
Thanks for your reply! Yes I think you are right. Towards the end of my video (right at the end I think) I flash up a photo and circle the bit you are talking about - is that right ?
And yes, it’s possible kickdown wasn’t working
@@MrToddgibbs yes you can change the tension of the cable via the clamp on the photo at the end of your video
great, thanks!
regarding your speedo problem : I have put an item on rennlist porsche 928 forum: for those who have issues with their speedometer ( no speed, nor odometer indication), it could be that the sinus-signal ,coming from the speedsensor , is too weak. The magnetic field of the magnetic disc could be weakened through the years by aging. the solution : boost up the signal by shunting the 12V to the Sinus-signal via a resistance of 1kOhm. this is done by soldering this resistance at the back of flex foil and this between the lowest rivet (12V @speedometer ) and the rivet just above (signal from speedsensor) I can send you a photo of this because any links put on youtube are being removed….
As always, impressed with your approach to repairing your car. Did you make a video outlining your goals and approach for the build?
Hi! Thanks :) no I never made that video - my goal is just to finish the car to the best quality I can
There's a possibility that the Bowden cable is stretched almost to the limit of adjustment. Worth bearing mind, if nothing else. Keep up the good work Todd, looking forward to the next vid. 👍
Thanks John :)
Firstly, I have the later 4 speed but I think the idea is the same. The bowden cable is critical for the shift point and a small adjustment makes all the difference. The kick down is entirely electrical - there's a switch under the gas pedal and an electrical servo on the gearbox. On mine, the adjustment for the bowden is under the inlet manifold. Tricky to get at but possible. The factory setting requires removing the ball joint (which you did) and adjusting it so that it just reconnects without any pushing or pulling. You have to remove it as the return spring is not that strong. This depends, of course, on your throttle being correctly adjusted first.
Hi Howard, I think its different on the 3speed. Going to read some merc docs on the gearbox... will keep you posted
Maybe something with the magnets inside the diff?
Hey :) I dont think so... my huge magnet should have worked. I'll take it away from the car and test on the bench.
Hey Todd...a coujple of links for you: Mercedes 722.3x Automatic Transmission Fluid Leak Points: ua-cam.com/video/z-mjwg1-Wzs/v-deo.html Mercedes 722.3 Auto Transmission Service Vacuum Modulator Adjustment Cable Adjustment How To DIY: ua-cam.com/video/WRgAfTmoIkI/v-deo.html
Fantastic, thank you
Modulator is for shift firmness...it should be relatively firm. Bowden is your kick down. The shift point on a 3sp is not something I'm super familiar with. Have you gone to Rennlist to research?
This is for the later 722...but he shows how the Bowden cable works. Lots of videos to look through and great leak detection and solutions here on the channel: ua-cam.com/video/aIiP0Yh21Hk/v-deo.htmlsi=Bzsv7gdzIWUcbnKk
There also should be a test port and a "bar" range (if it's like the 4sp) to set the shift modulator "perfectly". Again...Mercedes source has a video and sells the tool. I'm sure you could source one locally. They sell theirs with an 8' hose to run it through the window when testing.
Ah great idea… I never thought of searching Mercedes! Thanks :)
I have a 78 manual myself, so I don't know enough about the automatic transmission. However, I am interested in whether the speedo is working after the speed sensor replacement. Super interesting videos, I'll keep watching.
Thanks Eugene. Mine is unlikely to work since I believe the cluster’s flexible circuit board is broken (it’s the one stuck to the back of the instrument cluster). Video coming soon on that …
@@MrToddgibbsI have had mine sine 87. The cluster has been off a few times. The clips on to the edge of the board are awful. I have heard of people soldering to the board and using multiple connectors. A job I have been putting off for 30 years or so.
Multipin connectors.
@keithhoughton4308 hi Keith, I have a solution coming up in a few weeks… stay tuned :)
Hi Todd, our first 928 S1 '82 3spd auto did kickdown to first till aprox 55mph or so. Can't Mercedes bring more info about when to shift as this box came from them? Good luck!
Yes good point! Will check merc videos. Interesting about kickdown…
My car is an S and has the 4 speed auto, so that is different, however certainly the "engine end" of the bowden cable is adjustable and it greatly changes the change up point. The 4 speed also has the vac pod, my understanding is that changes the "firmness" of the shift rather than the shift point. BTW are you sure your rev counter is accurate? I might be totally wrong but the engine sounds higher than just 4K revs. Maybe the bowden cable is the wrong type, if I look at the 3 speed cable on the rosepassion website, it does look adjustable to me? does yours look like that?
Hmm good question about the rpm. Although at the start I included a clip of it revving to 6000, did that sound higher? I don’t think these engines would rev much higher? I’ll check the Bowden cable but I think it’s right - thanks for the reply
@@MrToddgibbs Ah yes I had missed the first few seconds of the vid when you revved it out to 6K, so yes agreed that is clearly higher than later when it changes just over 4K. I think you have found the answer to the adjustment in other replies. My confusion comes from only knowing the 4 speed, it's very different for the operating cables on the box.
Yeah it seems differently adjusted. I think the rpm when shown at 6000 is about 6000 in reality.
Sort of, the engine vacuum determines the type of shift from soft to hard (with no vacuum). The bowden cable determines the shift point and there's a switch under the throttle pedal that causes kickdown. When your gently driving it should shift up at under 2k not 4k. I'm not sure your rev counter is right, it looks low compared to the sound of the engine
Hi Gaz, when it shifts at 4k the pedal is in the floor. Normal driving shifts down at 2000 or so. I think the rpm is correct, but I’ll get a digital meter to check….
How much in total would you say you’ve spent on restoring it?
Hey, good question! I list all costs at the end of every video (full length videos on my channel
Now yer talking
mine is doing my head in, Guess what I will be trying, mine is doing the same, but when it comes on boost and lights them up
Vacuum leak? It’s a nightmare to track down… have you had it on something to track down the error codes ?
Small question, I'm doing more of a poor mans rebuild where I try to salvage as much as possible. Now I would like to look at the injector spray and see if it is good or not. How would you recommend taking it out? Screw it out with the aluminium bushing, so leaving it in the maybe brittle rubber, or pulling it from the rubber? I prefer to just be able to put it back if the injector is good enough.
To be honest, why not run the engine and see how it is:.. that would be cheapest :)
@@MrToddgibbs ah yes well it isn't running and has been standing for 20 years or so. So was just wondering if there was a non destructive way of getting them out, maybe screwing out the aluminium could simply be put back in idk.

Us British UA-cam watchers have all started using American phrases , in this you kept saying "bucks" and you're clearly British (maybe you've spent some time in the US) and today I was at the dentist and a chap asked the receptionist "where is the bathroom" ..it makes me laugh, I wonder if Americans are doing the same with our terminology..probably not.
